  1. The Five Second Rule. Keep in mind that it takes the reader about five seconds to determine whether to read on or place your resume in the “no” pile.
  2. The Order – A General Rule. Education first for newer sales professionals; experience first for 5+ year professionals.
  3. Showcase Your Package. A “PROFILE,” PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY,” or “SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS” section should highlight at the top your accomplishments, qualifications, and industry expertise.
  4. Emphasize Your Achievements. Describe your employment in terms of quantifiable results, accomplishments, and successes. Examples: “Implemented successful outside sales campaign that increased gross sales by 35%.
  5. Use Action Words. Use action words to add power to your resume. Examples: increased; established; achieved; improved; collaborated; managed; led; successfully.
  6. Make it Reader-Friendly. Vary font size and use bullet points and italics to add visual interest.
  7. Know When to Consult a Professional. Consider consulting a job search firm specializing in placing sales professionals. They do the search for you. If they place you, the employer pays their fee. You pay nothing.
